The other half of the shell.

Forge is a roofing and exteriors company, and siding is the exteriors half. Roof and siding do the same job from different angles: they keep weather on the outside of the building. When one of them is failing, the other one usually ends up carrying more than it was meant to.

Why it is worth doing with the roof

Roof and wall meet at a lot of awkward places. Where a lower roof runs into an upper wall, where a dormer sits, around a chimney. Those junctions are where flashing lives, and flashing is where leaks come from. When the same crew does the roof and the siding, those details get worked out once, in the right order, instead of being handed off between two trades who each assume the other one dealt with it.

Signs it is time

Siding tends to fail quietly. Worth a look if you are seeing any of this.

• Panels that are cracked, split, loose or buckling
• Soft spots in the wall sheathing underneath
• Paint that will not stay on, or boards that stay damp
• A heating bill that keeps climbing for no obvious reason
