K-style, 5 and 6 inch.

Gutters are the least interesting part of a house right up until they stop working, at which point they become a foundation problem, a landscaping problem and a basement problem all at once. Forge installs K-style gutter in both 5 and 6 inch.

What K-style means

K-style is the profile with the flat back and the decorative front face that reads a bit like crown moulding. It is what almost every house in the area already has. The flat back fastens straight to the fascia, and the shape holds more water than the older half round profile of the same nominal size.

5 inch or 6 inch

Five inch is the common residential size and it is genuinely fine on a lot of houses. Six inch carries noticeably more water and takes a larger downspout, which is what you want when the roof is big, when it is steep enough to dump water fast, or when a long run of roof drains into one short section of gutter. That last case is where undersized gutter tends to overshoot in a hard rain, and people usually blame the gutter when the real problem is that it was never big enough.

Doing gutters with a roof

If the roof is being replaced anyway, that is the sensible moment to deal with the gutters. The drip edge and the gutter meet, the crew is already there, and you are not paying twice to have someone work along the same eave. Pam Lantz had both done at once, which is why her recommendation mentions the roof and the gutters together.
